BACKGROUND
In 2022, John Blangor, Bryan Bunch, Neal Hudson, and Clifton Spinner established this scholarship for the financial benefit of students from Steubenville High School. John, Bryan, Neal and Clifton grew up together in Steubenville and have been friends since the third grade. They attended Steubenville High School and played football and wrestled together.
After they graduated from high school, they moved onto West Liberty together. Bryan wrestled, was awarded a wrestling scholarship, and had a very successful wrestling career as a three-time All-American while at West Liberty. John, who was Bryan’s roommate, also wrestled and was named an All-American while at West Liberty. Clifton and Neal were roommates, and both played football. Clifton was fortunate enough to have a scholarship. Neal attended one year completing his freshman year and made the decision to join the United States Air Force in 1985 due to financial challenges that made college out of reach for him.
In fact, Neal’s story is an inspiration to the entire group, who all eventually went on to pursue successful careers. Neal, John, Bryan and Clifton all have a passion for helping kids from Steubenville High School pursue higher learning at WLU. For them, it is all about advocating opportunity for these students. Their parents instilled Christian values and encouraged them to always keep God first. It is these values and many prayers that have inspired them to pay it forward.
West Liberty is a special place to each of them and they have found memories of inspirational mentors like Coach Vince Monseau, legendary Head Wrestling Coach. Academically, Bryan, John and Clifton all majored in Criminal Justice. Bryan and John joined Clifton at his encouragement in becoming Criminal Justice majors because there were good job opportunities in the field. Bryan went on to work as a Correctional Officer for 25 years and was transferred all over the country while working for the Federal Bureau of Prison. John also worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 30 years retiring as a commander. Clifton joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol as a Troope and retired as a commander after a successful 28-year career. He went on to become the Director of Public Safety at Franklin University.
After his career in the Air Force, Neal went on the become a manager at a business in Indiana. They all continue to remain active working for other organizations since their retirements.
