This scholarship is given to honor the memory of Fred D. Roth, a founding partner of the accounting firm of S.R. Snodgrass and Company in Wheeling. Stuart Snodgrass formed the accounting firm of S. R. Snodgrass and Company in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania in 1946. His very first professional employee was Fred D. Roth. Fred was a decorated World War II veteran who had just returned home to the Beaver Valley after a stint working with Gulf Oil as an accountant in Caracas, Venezuela. Mr. Snodgrass sent Fred to Wheeling in 1949 to open the first branch office of Snodgrass and now, the office is about to celebrate its 50th year of service in the Wheeling area. The Snodgrass’ Wheeling office employs about 20 people and is one of the largest CPA firms in the Ohio Valley. Snodgrass, as a whole, has six branch offices throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, and is recognized as one of the top 100 public accounting firms in the United States.
The company’s mission is to provide high quality consultation, tax, accounting, and audit services. These services include performing audits of financial institutions, commercial businesses, nonprofit and governmental agencies, corporate and individual tax preparation, management consulting, and estate planning. Fred Roth died on September 20, 1997, and, in his memory, Snodgrass, A.C., has established scholarship programs at West Liberty State College and Wheeling Jesuit University for accounting students from the local area. Snodrass hires most of its professional personnel from local colleges.
