Catharine H. Dorer graduated from West Liberty in 1928 with a two year teaching certificate. Mrs. Dorer,a native of Elizabeth, WV, taught at Woodsdale Elementary and has served as the director of the local Girl Scout program. Her son Walter Dorer, an oral surgeon in Aliquippa, PA, graduated from West Liberty State College in 1954.
Her granddaughter, Gretchen Dorer Mellott, received a degree at West Liberty State College in Dental Hygiene in 1981. Her grandson Kurt Dorer, a dentist, married Mary Janet Seidel, who received a degree at West Liberty State College in Dental Hygiene in 1982. Scholarships will be awarded in memory of Walter’s wife Beverly, who passed away in October of 1996.
Requirements
Each year one or two first-year dental hygiene majors will be selected to receive a scholarship of an amount not to exceed $1,000.
- Eligible students must complete the written scholarship application.
- Students must be first year dental hygiene majors and be members of the American Dental Hygiene Association.
- Students must have financial need.
In addition, criteria for selection shall include outstanding clinical proficiency, good patient skills and a high degree of professionalism in the following areas:
- patient oral health assessment
- patient education for the prevention of oral disease
- instrumentation techniques for the removal of acquired tooth deposits
- verbal communication skills and ability to develop positive relationships with patients
- professional appearance and demeanor
