*SCHOLARSHIP NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL FALL 2026
BACKGROUND
This scholarship was established to in memory of Doris Waddell Dalrymple by her children.
Doris was born in 1921 in Bethany Pike, West Virginia. From an early age, she developed a passion for swimming, spending many days in the pools at Wheeling and Oglebay Parks. In sixth grade, she was thrilled to join the girls’ basketball team, which marked the start of her lifelong athletic journey. After graduating from Wellsburg High School, she attended West Liberty State College with the goal of becoming a physical education teacher and coach.
Throughout her career, Doris taught physical education and health in schools in Webster, WV, Wheeling, WV, Smithfield, OH, Westfield, NY, Brilliant, OH and Mingo Junction, OH. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she coached basketball, volleyball, track and served as a cheerleader advisor. Her students fondly referred to her as “Coach D” often sharing how she helped them overcome challenges, build confidence, and discover their strengths.
Doris’ love for swimming and basketball never wavered. She later passed her passion to her grandchildren, teaching them to swim in her pool and play basketball at a neighborhood court.
