Mr. Davis graduated from Chester High School in Chester, WV in 1952.
After working and serving in the U.S. Army, he entered West Liberty State College in the fall of 1957. While attending West Liberty State College, he was the treasurer of Beta Gamma Fraternity for two years, served on the Student Council for two years, was a member of the Student Faculty Judiciary Committee and was elected treasurer of his Junior Class, served on the Men’s Governing Board for Shotwell Hall, was sport’s editor for The Trumpet, was a member of the Business Club IRC and Vet’s Club, and was listed on Who’s Who in American Universities & Colleges. He also presented the Alpha Sigma Pi Business Fraternity Award for Academic Achievement. He graduated from West Liberty State College in 1961 with a B.S. in Business Administration.
After graduation, he went to work for Armstrong Cork Co. He served as marketing representative in various locations in 1968 when he joined the Robinson Humphrey Co. as a stock broker. He became branch manager in 1973.
Through his career he also served as a branch in various locations for Kidder Peabody and Shearson Lehman Brothers before retiring in 1989 as Branch Manager for Season in Sarasota, FL.
Use/Purpose: Income from this fund will be used to provide scholarships to incoming who are actively recruited for participation on the intercollegiate football team. The scholarship will be awarded at a rate of $500 per semester for up to four years per recipient ($4,000 maximum).
Selection of Recipients: Students must qualify for admission to West Liberty. The recipient will be selected by the head football coach, with Joe Davis being informed of the selection. Preference will be given to residents of Florida.
Requirements: Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and a SAT score of at least 1000 or ACT score of 21 or above.
Maintaining Eligibility: To continue to receive the scholarship, the recipient must maintain academic and athletic eligibility. Eligibility will be monitored by the Athletic Department on a semester-by-semester basis. If a student becomes ineligible, leaves the University or decides not to participate on the football team, a new recipient will be identified from the next incoming class. (Medical redshirts would retain four years of support if they meet the other eligibility requirements).
