In 2019, Dr. Terence Shimp and his wife, Judith, endowed a scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Shimp and his four brothers to provide tuition assistance for WLU students from Marshall County enrolled in the Gary E. West College of Business.
The brothers, Vincent (Vince), Malcolm (Mac), Terence (Terry), Jackson (Jack) and Douglas (Doug), all attended West Liberty. Vince graduated in 1964 and went to earn a master’s degree from WVU. After completing his master’s, he went to work for the Ford Motor Company in Michigan and spent his entire career with Ford as a Labor and Personnel Relations Executive.
Mac graduated from West Liberty in 1971 with an accounting degree and, among other jobs, worked for the family clothing business, Auby’s Inc., for number of years. After the business closed, he self-studied and passed all for parts of the CPA exam on the first attempt and then worked for a Wheeling-based CPA firm.
Terry graduated from West Liberty in 1968 with a major in social studies and a minor in business. He went on to receive an MBA from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate (DBA) from the University of Maryland. He had a long career as a Marketing professor, first at Kent State University for four years and subsequently at the University of South Carolina for 29 additional 29 years.
Although Jack did not graduate from West Liberty, he attended and was about one semester short of earning a degree. He worked at various jobs including the family business. He sadly passed away at the young age of 54.
Doug graduated from West Liberty in 1973 with a marketing degree. He worked in the family business from the age of 15 until the business was closed. After that he was employed for many years at the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services.
The Shimp brothers grew up in Moundsville, WV with their parents, Aubrey and Letha, who were hardworking individuals and sacrificed their lives for their children. Aubrey was part owner of Auby’s Inc., which was a clothing store in Moundsville. Letha was a stay-at-home mom until her children were grown, at which time she helped with the business. Aubrey and Letha provided a solid foundation, which paved the way for their sons to be successful in their careers and lives.
