Louis P. Cardamone and Darlene F. Cardamone endowed this scholarship in memory of their son Gregory L. Cardamone, who graduated from West Liberty State College in 1987. Louis and Darlene graduated from West Liberty State College in 1965 and 1961, respectively.
Gregory was born in Pittsburgh in 1961 and attended Cambridge High School in Ohio. He was on the OVAC All-Star Football Team during his senior year, and he received the Lilenthal Award given to Cambridge’s most valuable football player. He graduated in 1980 and attended the University of Central Florida before transferring to West Liberty. Gregory graduated with a BS degree, and he worked in food and retail management.
Gregory passed away on Good Friday in 1999. His family and friends remember Gregory for his humor, caring, and loyalty. He is most remembered as a loving son, brother, and friend.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The student-athlete must have attained at least a junior ranking in the college at the time the scholarship is distributed.
- The student-athlete must be in good academic standing as determined by WLU.
- The student-athlete must be satisfactorily progressing toward graduation as determined by WLU.
- Preference will be given to individuals who participate on both the football and wrestling teams.
When additional scholarships are granted in future years, the following overall objectives of the donors should be factored in:
- No student should receive the scholarship for more than three years, as the earliest scholarship is ever to be awarded is during the sophomore year.
- The emphasis should be placed on the student’s academic performance ahead of his athletic performance.
- Overall objective of the donors is to provide a reasonable amount of money for as many students as possible for as many years possible (up to three years).
