Mr. Crutchfield, who died in 1990 at the age of 73, was born in Burnsville, WV. He resided in Huntington, WV for most of his life. He was survived by his wife Peggy, a retired women’s basketball coach, who made the first gift in his memory. Mr. Crutchfield was a veteran of World War II and came out of the service and helped put Charles E. and Laura Bell Crutchfield through college. Family members describe him as a humanitarian and a “people person.”
Mr. Crutchfield was appointed as the Director of Veterans Affairs for the West Virginia Veteran’s Administration by both republican and democratic governors. He served as a high school teacher prior to his post at Veteran’s Affairs. As a teacher he was well-respected by students, faculty, and members of the community.
Requirements
- Scholarships will be awarded to eligible student athletes with consideration given to: athletic ability, academic ability, financial need, West Virginia residency and veteran affiliation.
- The student must have a 2.5 grade point average.

The criteria above, designated by the scholarship donor, denote the characteristics of those student-athletes who may be eligible for this scholarship.
All students who meet these criteria are evaluated as potential candidates for the scholarship. The awardee is notified by the Financial Aid office if they have been selected as the recipient.
